Big Ideas – Agra Community

Reinventing the Edge: A sustainable solution to suburban sprawl.

The Botanic Community is a green vision of a reinvented suburbia. The Botanic community is experienced within and from without as a garden. Neighborhoods of tile roofs are replaced with bermed dwelling units that give way to nature, relieving monotonous cookie cutter forms of the past. Medium level density is introduced through multi-generational living patterns, and neighborhoods become sustainable through live-work options, localized centers of commerce, green design and planning. Localized agriculture provides at-source food security, economy and stability, while adding to the botanic character of the community.

Agricultural zones contain grow houses prototyped by the University of Arizona. Grow houses provide food distributed by short trip vehicles to local markets. Each neighborhood has access to local orchards as well as weekly farmer’s markets and local stores for basic sundries and convenience foods. With an expansion of open space, local flora and fauna are re-introduced or preserved and botanic learning gardens are integrated into each community.
